There’s something unique about Kim Il Tae ’s gold art, and that’s that it’s not gold leaf that Korean artist paints with, but pure gold. He is the only artist in the world to create these sculptured gold canvasses and has received worldwide critical acclaim for his unique and laborious style, bringing traditional oriental styles to this truly modern production.
Kim struggled to find a niche that would allow him to break out into the art world, and after painstakingly experimenting to find the right mixture of gold pigment, powders and oils, he finally was able to create the texture and colour that would allow him to paint using the precious metal. The hard work has paid off, and Kim now holds a monopoly on his form of art – something of a rarity in today’s art world – and some of his collectors include Madonna, the UN General Secretary and Eric Schmidt.
Having held numerous solo exhibitions around East Asia, including Hong Kong, China, Indonesia and Japan, Kim Il Tae will be showcasing his work at the Saatchi Gallery for the first European exhibition of Korean gold art. Find out more here.May 15, 2016
